Silicone Durometer (Hardness)
Durometer is the international standard for measuring the hardness of rubber, plastic, silicone and other non-metallic materials. These materials are rated on the Shore A Durometer scale. These silicone block hardness ratings have a tolerance of + or – 5 points.
Silicone Blocks are available in 10, 20, 30, and 50 durometer. Block durometer differences are noticeable and are often important to the application.
Below are some examples of common materials with various Shore A Durometer readings:
- 10 Durometer (Very Soft): Chewing Gum
- 20 Durometer (Soft): Rubber Band
- 30 Durometer (Medium): Pencil Eraser
- 50 Durometer (Firm): Tire Tread
